German Language Requirements

Applicants who have not acquired their university qualifications at a German speaking institution in Germany or at an equivalent institution abroad can be admitted to study a discipline within the academic programme ISE when they demonstrate knowledge of German by presenting a certificate of at least the

  • Level A2 for Bachelor Degree

  • Level B1 for Master Degree


achieved on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

These students will be admitted with the provison that they successfully complete the language courses in German and achieve the level of B2 on CEFR test before registering for the final thesis.

The language courses are not necessary when the students during the admission demonstrate knowledge of German by:

proofing that German is their native language or
presenting a DSH Certificate (a certificate for the German language test for admission to a German institution of higher learning for foreign students, formerly called PNdS) on the level DSH-1 or
presenting a TestDaF Certificate (test of German as a foreign language) with the level TDN 4 in all parts or
presenting a certificate at least equivalent to the TestDaF or
certifying that the language of instruction during their first degree was exclusively German.
To be exempted from the German language course please bring a copy of the concerning certification to SCIES (BC 210).

English Language Requirements

Applicants who are not native speakers of English can be admitted to study a discipline within the academic programme ISE when they demonstrate knowledge of English by presenting a certificate of at least the level B1 achieved on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) by means of having:

a. taken English as a major subject during the general qualification for university entrance (Abitur) or

b. passed one of the following English tests at the level indicated

  • TOEFL 173 (computer-based)

  • TOEFL 61 (internet-based)

  • IELTS: Limited User, Band 4.0

  • University of Cambridge: Preliminary English Test

  • an equivalent grade on an equivalent test


These students will be admitted with the provison that they successfully complete the language courses in English and achieve the level of B2 on CEFR test before registering for the final thesis.

The language course is not necessary when the students during the admission demonstrate knowledge of English by certifying:

a) the passing of an English test with the following results:

  • TOEFL 233 (computer-based)

  • TOEFL 90 (internet-based)

  • IELTS: Competent User, Band 6.0

  • University of Cambridge: Certificate in Advanced English

  • or an equivalent test with an equivalent grade or;


b) that the relevant disciplines were taught exclusively in English at the school or the higher educational institution at which the certification of preparatory training or the first professional qualifying degree was obtained, respectively.

To be exempted from the English language course please bring a copy of the concerning certification to SCIES at University of Duisburg-Essen Building (BC 210).

Language Courses

The language of instruction is half German and half English. This means that approx. 50% of the courses are taught in German and the other 50% are taught in English. The language of the examination is the same as the language of instruction in the corresponding lecture.
